WordPress Platform For Websites
The WordPress platform was originally designed to be a blogging platform but is now widely recognized to be a complete content management system (CMS). This means that it offers an alternative method of creating and managing a website quickly and easily.
If you are using one of our recommended hosting companies, the installation of a WordPress blog is very easy and fast. In your hosting account, go to your control panel (cPanel) and find Fantastico (or another script installer). A script installer is able to install a WordPress blog with a couple of clicks of your mouse button.
NOTE: Your website on the WordPress platform must have a domain name before it can be visible on the internet. Alternatively, you can install it in a subdirectory of an existing domain. However, a business website *must* have its own domain name in order to be taken seriously and attract as much traffic as possible.
When you log in you come to the admin area, which is the place you can do 'everything' with your WordPress platform website (blog). On the left-hand side you'll see a navigation bar listing all the tasks (by category) that can be done. The taskbar is pretty self-explanatory; click on the tiny arrow (it shows when you hover over) on each category to see the subtopics.
WordPress platform Take your time to explore all the options. Then go to Settings and fill in as much relevant information as you can (in all subcategories). Remember to click Save Changes on the bottom. Don't worry if there are things you don't understand the meaning of; the default settings are ok for now, you can change them later as you learn more about these things.
When you are ready to make your first blog post, click on Posts, then on Add New. In the next window, you can add your post. Type the title of the blog post in the upper slot, then the content in the box below.
Click on the Preview button to the right to view what the blog post will look like. When you are satisfied, click on Publish to make the post "go live". Of course, you can change anything later on, if needed.
TIP: If you want to have one particular post on top permanently, you can make it sticky. You can do that when writing a post, or by editing an already written and published post (you must be in the 'writing' window). In the right column, beside 'Visibility: Public', click on the Edit link, then check the "Stick this post to the front page" box. Click the OK button to save.
The WordPress platform provides you with two options to add content: Visual and HTML. If you don't know HTML, use the visual option and type in the text just as if it was a text editor or copy/paste from a text editor. Click on the icons above to see what tools are hiding behind them.
Above the text box, you will see the words Upload/Insert, followed by four icons. Hover over them, and you will see that they are tools to add images, video, audio and media files to your blog.
In the right column (of the 'writing' window) you can add Tags to your blog post, which are keywords telling what the post is about. Just above the Tags area, there is the Categories field where you can add (new) categories. Your posts should be assigned to at least one category.
WordPress comes with two templates (themes) preloaded, both of which are working ok. However, you might want to install another template for your new blog that fits your blog better.
